Stop Smoking

As with many diseases that negatively impact the quality and length of life, smoking can be the route cause. Smoking can contribute to a range of eye conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

Regular eye tests will ensure that you're wearing the correct glasses. Wearing incorrect glasses could make your eye condition worse as your eyes are continuing to strain.

Take Regular Breaks

In an age of advancing technology, it is more important than ever to ensure that you're taking regular breaks from screens. Prolonged time staring at a screen can cause tiredness and headaches. A great way to deal with this is to follow the 20/20/20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Wear Sunglasses

UV rays can cause lasting damage to your eyes. When choosing which glasses to wear, it's important that they carry the CE or British Standard mark. Wearing glasses without a UV ray certification will not protect your eyes from UV damage.

Avoid Dry Eyes

Looking at a screen for too long and prolonged time in central heating or air conditioning can dry out your eyes and cause irritation. It's also important to check the side effects of any medication that you may be taking. Try using lubricating eye drops, drink lots of water, eat foods high in omega 3 and vitamin A, C and E and blink often.

Many eye conditions are hereditary. Serious conditions such as glaucoma can create long-term, irreversible visual problems. Catching these conditions early can improve quality of life dramatically.
